Whelping and Breeding Dogs... Tips for Breeders from ThePetCenter.com.

Whelping and Breeding Dogs... Tips for Breeders from ThePetCenter.com.: "Weaning Puppies From Their Mother
Most breeders will not allow pups to nurse from the bitch longer than 5 weeks. They are introduced to a starter or weaning formula at about 24 days of age when the pups will be able to begin eating on their own. One of the best ways to wean puppies is to present them with a semi-liquid nourishment in a shallow pan such as a cookie baking sheet. Gently place the pups at the edge of the food, push their little chins into the food and they will smell it and begin to lick the mixture you prepared. It's really fun to watch them light up at their first taste of puppy formula! Once they get a taste of the food they usually consume it in earnest. This process of starting on puppy weaning formula can begin at three weeks of age and within a week they will be looking for that special treat we call puppy food! Gradually thicken the formula with ground up dry puppy food or begin adding canned puppy food to their weaning mixture. By five weeks of age they should be eating four meals a day of a high quality puppy food. You can break up kibble so it is smaller than packaged or soak it a bit in warm water to soften. It is a good idea to get pups acquainted with both canned and dry food. Some suggested starter formulas will be displayed here soon.
NOTE! Always have fresh and clean water available. Introduce the pups to the water dish as you did to the puppy weaning formula."

Whelping and Breeding Dogs... Tips for Breeders from ThePetCenter.com.: "If impregnation into the uterine lining has occurred, your veterinarian will be able to feel the swollen areas along the uterus about the twenty-second to the twenty-fourth day after the last breeding. A good estimate of the number of active areas can be made, too, so you can start lining up all those potential buyers for your pups! The pups are usually ready to enter our world sixty-three days after conception, although small breeds often have shorter gestation periods of only fifty-nine or sixty days. It is best to count days starting from the last known breeding since many bitches will allow breeding to occur for two to four days in a row.

What To Expect When "It's Time"...

The first sign that the new puppy-family is on the way usually is signaled by the bitch's lack of interest in food about twenty-four hours before whelping. Then you may notice she will lick at her vulva and have slight abdominal cramping. Then the abdominal contractions become more frequent...about every half hour. All of a sudden you may notice a shiny, grayish sac drooping through the vulva; it looks like a gray water balloon. The bitch may walk around with this hanging out and will often open the "water sac" and a clear fluid will run out. The pup's on the way! In most cases the pup will be delivered within an hour of this sac being presented for your viewing pleasure since now the pup is surely in the pelvic canal. The first pup often is the most difficult for the bitch to pass, and she may strain quite hard and even moan a bit. Don't panic yet. (Although, it is a good idea to call your veterinarian and announce proudly "she's havin' 'em!". Now the entire animal hospital staff will be on the alert that you will be calling every fifteen minutes with updates on her progress.) If she hasn't passed the pup within one hour of the "water sac" showing, do call your veterinarian and discuss the need for her to be seen right away to help pass the pup.

Milk Replacer - Shelley Camm

1 c. yogurt
1 can evaporated milk
3 egg yolks
1 squeeze of liquid baby vitamins
6 oz boiled water

Puppy formula - Catherine Cargo

If you can't get any goat's milk (nectar of the Gods), this is the next best thing:

1 can condensed milk
1 can water
2 egg yolks
1 tablespoon of Karo syrup

I use this at weaning time over kibble.

Puppy formula - Benita

1/2 Esbilac
1/2 Goat's Milk

Used when bitch didn't have much milk. They thrived on this formula until I could wean them onto blended goat's milk and kibble.....at about 3 weeks.
Puppy formula - Phyllis Lane

Buy the canned goat's milk in the grocery store.

For newborn & very young puppies:

1/2 Goat's Milk
1/2 Water

You will have diarrhea, if you do not mix it with water.

When starting on solid food, I mix a gruel of goat's milk, softened kibble & baby (human) oatmeal cereal.

Q Exactly what type of yogurt should be used for the puppy formula?

A We use Vanilla flavored from supermarket, we have found that most won't eat plain. The older dogs that we give Yogurt to stop throwing up bile seem to prefer the flavored and the #1 favorite is Raspberry. They don't like Strawberry Banana.

Mary O'Neal
A Plain with the highest fat content you can purchase.

Female Dog Pregnancy Stages and Cycle Time Line

Female Dog Pregnancy Stages and Cycle Time Line

The first thing that is convenient to know is how from a zygote (The cell resulting from the union of an ovum and a spermatozoon -- including the organism that develops from that cell), the resulting cell from the encounter between the spermatozoid and the ovule which has been fertilized goes producing the subsequent cellular divisions and the changes that gradually operate in the embryo and the fetus, according to a rigorous calendar finally lead to the birth of a perfectly healthy puppy (or puppies). When you know with detail all the principal changes and the development of the embryo and

fetus that takes place for 58 to 63 days of pregnancy, you can start taking into consideration other series of points.

For example:

Why is it so hard to diagnose pregnancy in a bitch?
Why is it difficult to calculate the number of puppies in the litter?
Why should I have to take such and such measures to avoid the administration of certain products that can be toxic for the embryos?
Or, how should I go preparing my dog for the moment of birth?
And you will be able to understand that it is possible that many breeders and dog owners – including myself – that take pride in being able to tell with total security if a female is pregnant or not by simply observing certain changes in her behavior.

Different Stages in the Female Dogs Life

Different Stages in the Female Dogs Life

The same as with any other being, bitches go through different stages in their lives, each one perfectly defined and differentiated from the other, and it is convenient to know each one in order to be able to correctly satisfy the needs of each of these stages.

Puppyhood
Teenhood

Adulthood
In toy, small and medium-sized breeds, this particular stage starts after the short period of transition that coincides with the presentation of the first heat; however, that is not the case with big or giant breeds, which are still considered teenagers after the first and second heats. In any case, the adult dog will normally behave more civilized and making good use of her good manners which have been previously taught to her. Dogs do not go through menopause which means that, unless their uterus or ovaries have been extracted, she will keep on having her heat cycles in more or less regular intervals. It is important that the owner writes down the exact date when the heat cycles start and end (and even today's in which she is especially ready to accept the male), which will be very useful in order to calculate the following heat cycles, especially when you notice that your dog cycles regularly.

Cedar is good for discouraging fleas. Consider a cedar "patch" for the dog to roll around in.
